Modeling of the Human Cerebral Collateral Circulation Evaluation of the Impact on the Cerebral Pathophysiology in Case of Ischemic Stroke

  • Motivation
Cerebral collateral circulation has major impact on the pathophysiology of cerebral ischemia and therefore also on the clinical outcome of ischemic stroke. In case of a failure of the principal conduits, a network of vascular channels maintains the cerebral blood flow. However, detailed knowledge of collateral circulation still remains mainly unknown.

Computational modeling provides unique opportunities to analyze the behaviour of cerebral blood flow in case of an ischemic stroke and to examine the role of the cerebral collateral circulation in more detail.

The aim of this work is to identify the basic formations of the collateral circulation anatomy and to model it using the transmission-line approach. In a cooperation with the institute of fluid mechanics, a comparison of the circulation with a more realistic and complex 3D-model will be established. The comparison shall be used to uncover to which level in detail the deviations of the transmission-line approach are sustainable.
