Monte Carlo Simulation of Photon Propagation in Turbid Media

  • While neurovascular surgery often an assessment of the blood flow inside the vessel is essential to evaluate the quality of the procedure. With the used of Indocyanine Green (ICG) a visualization of the flow can be achieved. ICG binds to the proteins in the blood and therefore flows with the blood and does not diffuse into the surrounding tissue.
Indocyanine Green (ICG) is injected intravenously into the vascular system and then visualized with an infra-red camera. The captured fluorescence signal is very helpful for the surgical staffs but hidden information are yet not revealed.
This project aims to understand the fluorescence behavior of ICG in flowing blood by setting up an computational simulation regarding the depth contribution to the captured signal.
