During systole, the left ventricle twists around its long axis. This aids in the ejection of blood from the ventricle. Therefore, rotation and torsion are important factors in cardiac mechanics. Typically, a healthy left ventricle will rotate counterclockwise in the apical region and clockwise in the basal region with a net angle of 13 to 27 degrees.
Observations in a cohort of 30 heart failure patients with left bundle branch block (LBBB) show an abnormal twisting motion. To better understand the underlying mechanisms of this abnormal rotation behaviour, an in-silico study on (bi)ventricular, patient specific models will be conducted. Hence, we first create patient specific ventricular geometries from MRI data and perform (electro-)mechanical simulations.
