Number of cameras for the 3D reconstruction

Simulation-based estimation of the number of cameras required for the 3D reconstruction of microsurgical operating channels

Researchers at IBT investigated how many cameras are needed so that a microsurgical operating channel can be reconstructed as completely as possible in 3D. For this purpose, a simulation study was carried out with different anatomical patients and operating canal models. They found that eight cameras enable the reconstruction of over 99% of the visible part of the model. With four cameras, over 95% can still be achieved. This answered an important key question for the development of a digital prototype surgical microscope.
