IBT at the 4th Annual Meeting of the Upright Radiotherapy and Imaging Research Consortium
The IBT delegation included Jonathan Frömel, Mark Arndt, and Dr. Alexander Pryanichnikov, accompanying Prof. Maria Francesca Spadea. The team contributed to the scientific program by sharing its expertise in upright radiotherapy and imaging workflows. Highlights included a presentation by Jonathan Frömel on a free-breathing spot-scanning proton radiography and CT framework developed for upright applications, an overview of recent industrial developments presented by Dr. Pryanichnikov, and an interactive discussion on the future of upright radiotherapy led by Prof. Spadea together with Prof. Lomax from PSI.
“We are very pleased to see continued progress in the field,” said Dr. Pryanichnikov, one of the co-chairs of the Consortium. “This year’s meeting was the largest so far, with many new faces joining the community. It was particularly encouraging to see the commissioning of new upright proton centers in Shanghai, China, as well as the first treatments delivered at the newest facility at Stanford, USA. These developments highlight the impact of the work being carried out within the Consortium.”
Prof. Spadea emphasized the importance of the European doctoral network UPLIFT: “The UPLIFT network has already made an important contribution to the community. We are delighted to be part of this growing momentum and to support a new generation of scientists working in this meaningful and clinically relevant field.”
For Jonathan Frömel, the meeting was also an important opportunity to present his master’s thesis results to an international audience. “It was a great experience to share my work with such an international community,” he said. “It highlights the excellence of IBT in this frontier area of research and clinical translation.”
The meeting also provided participants with the opportunity to experience Stockholm. “I would like to thank the organizers for choosing such a wonderful venue in the center of Stockholm,” said Jonathan Frömel. “We had the opportunity to explore the city as well.” Dr. Pryanichnikov added: “We always try to make the most of such meetings, so that participants can also enjoy a cultural experience. Personally, I really enjoyed visiting the Vasa Museum after the meeting.”
IBT KIT is actively involved in two projects within the European UPLIFT network, supporting clinical trials of upright image-guided proton therapy in Israel and planning joint experimental activities in Shanghai, China, next year.
