New Research Associate at the IBT

Diego Creta conducts research on assessing atrial fibrillation risk from the amplified P-wave within the TrackAF project.

The Institute of Biomedical Engineering (IBT) welcomes Diego Creta as a new research associate. Since early September 2026, he has been working in the “Computational Cardiac Modeling” research group at IBT as part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network led by PD Dr.-Ing. Axel Loewe, as a doctoral candidate within the international European project TrackAF, which comprises top-tier academic institutions, research hospitals and industry partners across Europe to keep track of and fight atrial fibrillation.
His research focuses on developing robust, automated methods to estimate the amplified P-wave duration (aPWD) from 12-lead ECGs and Holter recordings in large datasets, in order to study the risk of incidence and progression of atrial fibrillation (AF) in relation to age and sex, and to assess arrhythmia risk in relevant scenarios in silico.
Diego Creta completed his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Bologna, Alma Mater Studiorum (UNIBO). During a mobility period as a Visiting Research Student at the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), he investigated the structure of the atrioventricular node (AVN) across different mammalian species. In his Master's thesis he developed and simulated a first preliminary 1D dual-pathway model of the mouse AVN.
