Beatriz Cruzeiro Wins the Case Study Award at CERN Medical Accelerator School

We are thrilled to announce that Beatriz Cruzeiro and her team have been awarded first place in the Case Study Challenge at the CERN Accelerator School (CAS) on Medical Accelerators, held this June in Jūrmala, Latvia.

The Challenge: Bridging Technology and Policy

At the conclusion of their intensive two-week training, participants were tasked with a complex, real-world scenario: developing a comprehensive proposal to introduce particle therapy to a region currently without access to such facilities.
To succeed, Beatriz and her team had to look far beyond the physics of the machine. Their winning proposal demonstrated a holistic approach by addressing:

  • Strategic Implementation: Defining the clinical roadmap and infrastructure requirements.
  • Feasibility & Economics: Balancing the high-tech demands of accelerator technology with budget constraints, risk management, and long-term sustainability.
  • Societal Impact: Articulating the critical clinical need and the transformative effect on regional healthcare.

A Recognition of Innovation

"Winning the Case Study Challenge is a fantastic achievement," the team remarked. "It reflects not only the technical knowledge gained during the school but also the ability to translate complex accelerator concepts into viable, life-saving clinical solutions."

We are incredibly proud of Beatriz for this accomplishment. This recognition serves as a testament to the hard work and high standards of our researchers at IBT, and we look forward to seeing how these strategic insights will inform our future contributions to the global particle therapy community.
